In a statement on gender affirming and inclusive athletics participation, GLSEN states:

“For all students, having the opportunity to participate in sports results in positive outcomes, including physical development, social skills, and psychological well-being. The psychological benefits of sports specifically include improved emotional regulation, decreased hopelessness and suicidality, fewer depressive symptoms, and higher self-esteem. Research has also found that sports participation is related to greater feelings of school belonging and pro-school behaviors.”

GLSEN’s own survey of LGBTQ+ students found that 56% of team members and 66% of team leaders competing in high school sports reported feeling a positive sense of belonging at school. The Trevor Project found that in comparison, transgender/nonbinary athletes had significantly higher grades than their LGBTQ peers who did not participate in sports.  The Human Rights Campaign found that LGBTQ youth athletes were significantly more likely to “always feel safe in [their] classroom,” than those who had never played a sport to and were significantly less likely to have felt “depressed” or “worthless” in the past week. Those students who reported they used to play a sport, but no longer do, were least likely to feel safe at school, and the most likely to have felt depressed or worthless.

Given the obvious benefits of athletic participation to transgender and gender expansive students, NYTBF calls for an increase in opportunities for youth and young adults  to participate in sports and establishes this scholarship to support trans athletes in the New York City Tr-State area.
